Just ending the first month of the year, the Attorney General’s Office has reported on Thursday, January 30, eight cases of femicide throughout the country, a figure that already exceeds a similar period of time in 2024. In addition, the first infanticide of the year was registered in the department of Cochabamba.

“To date, we have eight cases of feminicide and one infanticide; obviously, the highest incidence of cases is in the central axis such as Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and La Paz; however, we have the obligation to clarify and convict these feminicides and infanticides, as long as we have conclusive evidence so that a Sentencing Court can give the maximum penalty”, informed the Attorney General of the State, Roger Mariaca.

In detail, the Public Prosecutor’s Office informed that of the total number of feminicide cases, three occurred in the department of Santa Cruz; two in La Paz; two in Cochabamba; and one in Oruro; while the rest of the regions remained at zero.

This figure is higher than the one registered in 2024. The report of the Attorney General’s Office as of January 31 of last year showed a total of five femicides. These had been in two in the department of Cochabamba, two in La Paz and one in Potosí. Meanwhile, this year, as of January 30, the cases of this crime have already reached eight victims.

Regarding infanticides, the first one this year took place in the department of Cochabamba. There, criminals attacked a man and his five-year-old daughter with gunshots when they were in their vehicle. The little girl died and her father was wounded.

The figure is, for now, lower than that of 2024. As of January 31 last year, the Public Prosecutor’s Office reported three infanticides, two in Oruro and one in Santa Cruz.

“The Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Bolivian Police have the obligation to investigate, they have the obligation to clarify. We have the obligation, together with the Judiciary, to convict these people, as long as the evidence turned into proof, to achieve the maximum sentence of 30 years without the right to pardon,” said Mariaca.

Bolivia closed 2024 with a total of 84 femicides and 34 infanticides. The highest figures for both crimes were recorded last year in the department of La Paz.
