The Departmental Legislative Assembly of Santa Cruz authorized the disbursement of Bs 8 million for the construction of a shelter for women and children victims of violence. The project is implemented in compliance with National Law No. 348 and allows for a rapid response to risk situations that are identified.
Zvonko Matkovic Ribera, president of the departmental legislature, highlighted the relevance of this project, which responds to the increase in cases of femicides and domestic violence in the department and the country.
It is something very important for this department, days ago we were going for 30 femicides so far this year, these works are increasingly important and relevant in our society,” he explained.
The data coincides with the information provided by the Prosecutor’s Office and the Special Force to Combat Violence. In addition to the 30 fatalities as a result of violence against women, 11,963 complaints were reported in the first quarter of 2022.
The construction of the shelter and temporary refuge for women and their children in a situation of violence provides quick and direct assistance.
The law states that each municipality should have a shelter. Many places do not have the resources to comply with this provision. Matkovic emphasizes that “the house of the Governor’s Office meets this need, not only in the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, but also for people from the provinces who not only arrive as victims, but also with their children, and that is where they have to be sheltered. It is something very important that has a real impact on the population”.
