Bolivia registers 35 femicides and 18 infanticides so far in 2024

From January 1st to May 29th, 35 women were murdered because of their gender. They were victims of femicide and the department of La Paz is the most dangerous in the country for women.

The updated report includes the last two cases of femicides, one occurred in the highlands of La Paz, in the municipality of Achacachi, and the other in Charcas, Chuquisaca.

The director of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes against Life, Elizabeth Viveros, informed that according to the cases attended to date, 35 femicides and 18 infanticides have been registered at national level, in both cases the highest incidence is in the department of La Paz.

“The Public Prosecutor’s Office constantly expresses its commitment to society and its commitment to the victims and their families who are mourned by these violent acts together with the Police, our operational arm is directed in a timely manner to prosecute and find the perpetrators of these acts so that they can be prosecuted and finally punished,” said Viveros.

FEMINICIDES

He also explained that the highest number of Feminicide cases is concentrated in the department of La Paz with 9 cases, followed by Cochabamba with 6, Santa Cruz 6, Tarija 4, Potosi 3, Oruro 3, Chuquisaca 2 and Beni 2.

According to comparative data, in the same period of 2023 there were 38 cases of Feminicide while in the current administration there are 35 cases.

At the national level, there are 35 victims of femicide, which are being investigated in 34 cases, of which 21 are in the preparatory stage, 8 with sentences and 5 in the preliminary stage. Of the total number of cases, 85.29% have identified perpetrators serving pre-trial detention and convictions.

INFANTICIDES

The department of La Paz concentrates most cases of infanticide with 10, followed by Santa Cruz with 4, Cochabamba with 2 and Oruro with 2.

As of May 29, 2023, there were 7 cases of infanticide, while in 2024 the number of cases increased to 18.

It should be clarified that the number of victims is 18 and 14 cases are being investigated, of which 9 are in the preparatory stage, 3 in the preliminary stage, 1 with a sentence and 1 with extinction due to the death of the perpetrator.

Of the total number of cases, 78.51% have the perpetrators identified with preventive detention and sentenced.
