With the presentation of a work project, the Education Committee for the prevention of teenage pregnancies in El Alto was formed on Monday.
This commission, made up of several agencies, such as the municipal government, Save the Children Bolivia, CEMSE (Centro de Multiservicios Educativos), among others, will be in charge of conducting lectures, courses and training in educational units of the 14 districts.
Estefanía Callisaya, municipal head of the Promotion and Prevention Unit, mentioned that her office, in coordination with the Youth Unit, presented the proposal for the committee. Considering the different services provided by the Mayor’s Office in favor of youth.
“We provide comprehensive care to our adolescents with doctors, medical advice, campaigns on contraceptive methods and talks. We also have the GAIE office (Gabinete de Atención Integral a Estudiantes), an office with psychologists specialized in adolescents,” said Callisaya.
Cristian Tancara, Director of Education Services, explained that the committee will also be in charge of highlighting the importance of sports. In addition to the prevention of alcoholism and drugs.
On behalf of CEMSE, Joaquín Mamani, said that, although work has progressed, there are still pending tasks. One of them is to achieve the integration of public, private and non-governmental institutions to promote the prevention of teenage pregnancies.
“We have just heard information from the United Nations Population Fund. And it indicates that the department of La Paz occupies fourth place nationally in teenage pregnancies, which continues to be worrisome,” Mamani insisted.
